For a start, thank you for the interview you give us. Would you like to tell us a few words about you?
Barbara black was founded in 2015 in Madrid. In 2016 we released the first EP “Spiritual Rock” and in 2017 the band’s first album “Ad libitum” was released. The single from this album, “Shiva” was chosen by the AEV as a possible candidate to represent Eurovision along with many other artists. In 2020 we edited and released our second album “Love, Death & Flies” which we are currently presenting as the pandemic prevented us from doing it before.
- How did you get into music?
Since I was a child, I always needed to express myself through singing. My love for it led me to take classes in vocal technique, music theory and piano and later to be part of my first rock band in my neighbourhood.
- Did your own people support you in all this? What were their reactions when you told them you wanted to get involved with music as well?
We have always had the support of our family and friends, and they have always been helping us both at the concerts and outside of them, so it has been a generally positive reaction.
- Is there an artist you admire or who is an inspiration to you?
We have many artists who inspire us individually and as a band. The most of them Doro Pesch and Eric Martin. But also artists like Maria Brink or Myles Kennedy for example,
and many others that I could spend hours naming.
- You have also released your first book entitled “Vampire Love, Chapter I: You Belong To Me”. Would you like to tell us a little about it?
Vampire love It is a song divided into two parts with which we have wanted to represent with an allegory the situation that thousands of women experience daily when having to deal with their harassers. Vampire love I, the main character is attracted to a vampire and finds herself immersed in a toxic relationship in which the vampire, seduced and mesmerized her, what ends up leading her to death. Vampire love II the victim wakes up in the middle of the night in the cemetery, and realizes that she has died, and the only thing that surrounds her is the sound of flies and insects in the night.
In short, with Vampire love I & II we want to express our opinion against gender violence and abusive relationships.
- The release of the first album should be a special moment. How did you feel? What were your thoughts and reactions as soon as you heard it?
Both the release of the first album “Ad Libitum” and the second, “Love, Death & Flies” is an adrenaline rush. It is the conclusion of months and months of hard work, both composition and editing, and it is always nice to see that a work in which you put so much care and affection is well received by the public as well as by critics and the media.
- Ladies Of Metal festival in Athens. Tell us about the festival
It is a festival that we really want to play. We have been working on it for many months, both as a band and with Angels PR Music Promotion, which organizes it. The only thing I can say is that it will be spectacular and that it is a pleasure to share the stage with so many incredible bands and to be at an event with truly incredible people.
- Do you expect anything specific from the festival?
I think we are going to have a really incredible time, there are bands of great quality and it is going to be spectacular.
- What are your plans for the future?
For now touring with “Love, Death & Flies” since due to the pandemic we couldn’t present it at the time. On the other hand, composing for the band’s third album, it is going to surprise you!
-Για αρχή, σας ευχαριστούμε για τη συνέντευξη που μας δίνετε. Θα θέλατε να μας πείτε λίγα λόγια για εσάς;
Οι Barbara black ιδρύθηκαν το 2015 στη Μαδρίτη. Το 2016 κυκλοφορήσαμε το πρώτο EP «Spiritual Rock» και το 2017 κυκλοφόρησε το πρώτο άλμπουμ του συγκροτήματος «Ad libitum». Το single από αυτό το άλμπουμ, “Shiva” επιλέχθηκε από την AEV ως πιθανός υποψήφιος για να εκπροσωπήσει τη χώρα στη Eurovision μαζί με πολλούς άλλους καλλιτέχνες. Το 2020 επεξεργαστήκαμε και κυκλοφορήσαμε το δεύτερο άλμπουμ μας “Love, Death & Flies” το οποίο παρουσιάζουμε αυτή τη στιγμή καθώς η πανδημία μας εμπόδισε να το κάνουμε στο παρελθόν.
– Πώς ασχολήθηκες με τη μουσική;
Από παιδί είχα πάντα ανάγκη να εκφράζομαι μέσα από το τραγούδι. Η αγάπη μου για αυτό με οδήγησε να παρακολουθήσω μαθήματα φωνητικής, θεωρίας μουσικής και πιάνου και αργότερα να γίνω μέλος του πρώτου μου ροκ συγκροτήματος στη γειτονιά μου.
– Σε στήριξαν οι δικοί σου άνθρωποι σε όλο αυτό; Ποιες ήταν οι αντιδράσεις τους όταν τους είπες ότι θέλεις να ασχοληθείς και με τη μουσική;
Είχαμε πάντα την υποστήριξη της οικογένειας και των φίλων μας και πάντα μας βοηθούσαν τόσο στις συναυλίες όσο και εκτός αυτών, οπότε ήταν μια γενικά θετική αντίδραση.
– Υπάρχει κάποιος καλλιτέχνης που θαυμάζεις ή που είναι έμπνευση για σένα;
Έχουμε πολλούς καλλιτέχνες που μας εμπνέουν ατομικά και σαν συγκρότημα. Περισσότερο από αυτούς η Doro Pesch και ο Eric Martin. Αλλά και καλλιτέχνες όπως η Maria Brink ή ο Myles Kennedy για παράδειγμα, και πολλοί άλλοι που θα μπορούσα να αφιερώσω ώρες, κατονομάζοντάς τους.
Έχετε κυκλοφορήσει και το πρώτο σας βιβλίο με τίτλο «Vampire Love, Chapter I: You Belong To Me». Θα θέλατε να μας πείτε λίγα λόγια για αυτό;
Το Vampire Love είναι ένα τραγούδι χωρισμένο σε δύο μέρη με το οποίο θέλαμε να αναπαραστήσουμε με μια αλληγορία την κατάσταση που βιώνουν χιλιάδες γυναίκες καθημερινά όταν έχουν να αντιμετωπίσουν τους παρενοχλητές τους. Στο Vampire love I, ο κύριος χαρακτήρας έλκεται από έναν βρικόλακα και βρίσκεται βυθισμένος σε μια τοξική σχέση στην οποία ο βρικόλακας, τη σαγήνευσε και τη μάγεψε, κάτι που την οδηγεί στο θάνατο. Στο Vampire love II το θύμα ξυπνά τα μεσάνυχτα στο νεκροταφείο και συνειδητοποιεί ότι πέθανε και το μόνο πράγμα που την περιβάλλει είναι ο ήχος από μύγες και έντομα τη νύχτα.
Εν ολίγοις, με το Vampire love I & II θέλουμε να εκφράσουμε την άποψή μας κατά της έμφυλης βίας και των καταχρηστικών σχέσεων.
– Η κυκλοφορία του πρώτου άλμπουμ πρέπει να είναι μια ιδιαίτερη στιγμή. Πώς αισθανθήκατε? Ποιες ήταν οι σκέψεις και οι αντιδράσεις σας μόλις το ακούσατε;
Τόσο η κυκλοφορία του πρώτου άλμπουμ “Ad Libitum” όσο και του δεύτερου, “Love, Death & Flies” είναι μια έκρηξη αδρεναλίνης. Είναι το τέλος μηνών και μηνών σκληρής δουλειάς, τόσο σύνθεσης όσο και επεξεργασίας, και είναι πάντα ωραίο να βλέπεις ότι ένα έργο στο οποίο δίνεις τόση φροντίδα και στοργή γίνεται αποδεκτό τόσο από το κοινό όσο και από τους κριτικούς και τα μέσα ενημέρωσης .
– Φεστιβάλ Ladies Of Metal στην Αθήνα. Μιλήστε μας για το φεστιβάλ.
Είναι ένα φεστιβάλ που θέλουμε πολύ να παίξουμε. Δουλεύουμε πολλούς μήνες πάνω σε αυτό, τόσο ως συγκρότημα όσο και με την Angels PR Music Promotion που το διοργανώνει. Το μόνο που μπορώ να πω είναι ότι θα είναι θεαματικό και ότι είναι χαρά να μοιραζόμαστε τη σκηνή με τόσα πολλά απίστευτα συγκροτήματα και να βρισκόμαστε σε μια εκδήλωση με πραγματικά απίστευτο κόσμο.
– Περιμένεις κάτι συγκεκριμένο από το φεστιβάλ;
Νομίζω ότι θα περάσουμε πραγματικά απίστευτα, υπάρχουν μπάντες εξαιρετικής ποιότητας και θα είναι θεαματικό.
Ποια είναι τα σχέδιά σας για το μέλλον;
Προς το παρόν να περιοδεύσουμε για το “Love, Death & Flies” μιας και λόγω της πανδημίας δεν μπορέσαμε να το παρουσιάσουμε εκείνη τη στιγμή. Από την άλλη, συνθέτουμε για το τρίτο άλμπουμ του συγκροτήματος, πρόκειται να σας εκπλήξει!
